Passaic Formation Sandstone and Siltstone facies (NJJTRps;5)

Geologic unit mapped in New Jersey: Sandstone (JTrps) is interbedded grayish-red to brownish-red, medium- to fine-grained, medium- to thick-bedded sandstone and brownish-to-purplish-red coarse-grained siltstone; unit is planar to ripple cross-laminated, fissile, locally calcareous, containing desiccation cracks and root casts. Upward-fining cycles are 1.8 to 4.6 m (6-15 ft) thick.

Siltstone. Siltstone is a clastic sedimentary rock that formed from grains whose sized between that of sandstone and mudstone. It can found different environmental conditions different color and textures. Siltstone generally are red and gray color with flat bedding planes. Darker colored siltstone have plant fossils and other carbon-rich matter.

Conglomerates with extraformational pebbles are rare and tend to be less than 1m thick; the "Waterstones Conglomerate" of Nottinghamshire is a notable example [Elliott, 1961]. Most mudstone and siltstone beds are reddish brown, though green-grey mottles and laminae are common. Gypsum occurs sporadically in the mudstones as small nodules.

Siltstone | rock | Britannica

Siltstone, hardened sedimentary rock that is composed primarily of angular silt-sized particles (0.0039 to 0.063 mm [0.00015 to 0.0025 inch] in diameter) and is not laminated or easily split into thin layers. Siltstones, which are hard and durable, occur in thin layers rarely thick enough to be classified as formations. Siltstones are intermediate between sandstones and shales but are not so ...

Balls Bluff Siltstone is uppermost unit of Culpeper Group present in Manassas quad. Pollen grains collected from Balls Bluff indicate a Late Triassic age, ranging from early to late Norian (R.J. Litwin, 1991, oral commun.), although lowest part of unit has been interpreted previously as possibly late Carnian (Lee and Froelich, 1989; Luttrell, 1989).

 · Siltstone. A siltstone is a lithified, nonfissile mudrock. In order for a rock to be named a siltstone, it must contain over 50% silt-sized material. Silt is any particle smaller than sand, 1/16 of a millimeter, and larger than clay, 1/256 of millimeter. Silt is believed to be the product of physical weathering, which can involve freezing and ...

The rock unit is the basic mapping unit for the rock material field classification (RMFC) system. It is de-fined as a body of rock that is identified in the field and mapped according to measurable or otherwise describable physical properties or features at a scale useful for project analysis.
